Born and raised in Cape Town, 25 year old Lize Mynhardt was blessed with perfect pitch. From the tender age of six she began playing and mastering the piano as well as the acoustic guitar despite the fact that she couldn’t read sheet music. To date Mynhardt plays seven instruments excluding her voice which has only improved year on year. All this lead her to audition for Idols in 2014 – where she reached the semi-finals and was placed second runner up. Since then, Mynhardt – who put her BComm LLB at Stellenbosch University on hold to become a fulltime musician – has been refining her art.
On 25 November 2016, Mynhardt released her debut single Dare to Daydream in collaboration with Cosher Recording Studios. The song was written during a period in Mynhardt’s life where she had been suffering from insomnia. The severe sleep deprivation and exhaustion resulted in the singer hallucinating; fueling the emotions and imagery described in the song lyrics. Mynhardt has always turned to music throughout her life to guide her through emotional ups and downs. “Dare to Daydream is one of the very first songs I ever wrote,” says Mynhardt. “I recently found it as a voice note on an old iPad that I gave to my little brother for Christmas. And if I remember correctly, I actually wrote the song in the middle of the night because I woke up and couldn’t sleep again.” After recently rediscovering the song. Mynhardt worked hard to produce the song in two days. A remake of the song featuring rapper ShabZi Madallion was released early 2017. She has released 5 singles to date.
Between singles and features, she has collaborated with Cosher Studios, DSB, DJ Qness, DJ Cesna, Ben Ludik and producers from Nashville.
After matriculating from high school in 2011 – and also whilst still studying at Stellenbosch University – Mynhardt focused on making a name for herself as a cover artist; performing at weddings, local restaurants, wine farms and at corporate events. In 2014, Mynhardt competed in a singing competition on a campus radio station, which immediately saw her catapulted to the top 16 contestants taking part in Idols that year. “When I look back and remember where that one opportunity has landed me I can only smile,” reminisces Mynhardt.
Amongst her notable achievements she counts being the opening act for Mi Casa, the Parlotones and Francois van Coke, as well as performing alongside Rosanthorn, Watershed, Majozi and Sterling EQ. Venues include Cavalli, Spier, Shimmy Beach Club, Le Quartier Francais and Lourensford Estate amongst others. “I feel untouchable when I’m on stage,” explains Mynhardt. “It’s an incredible feeling when you can figuratively bleed out your emotions into an audience and they can feel every drop of it. Everything I have felt over the years coupled with personal memories and life experiences is what I want people to feel me projecting through my music.”
Oh, and she has a pizza addiction… it’s real…
